In 1856, the State of Tennessee purchased 500 acres of The Hermitage plantation, including the mansion and outbuildings, from Jackson’s adopted son Andrew Jackson, Jr. The intention was to preserve the property as a “shrine” to Andrew Jackson. The state intended to turn over the property to the Federal Government as the site of a southern branch of the United States Military Academy.

This is done as a deterrent to third party vendors, i.e. scalpers, who may purchase large blocks of seats and then resell them online at an inflated cost. The term “household” refers to any shared information on one or more accounts. The rest of the site, including the introductory film, self-guided tour of the museum, garden and grounds and wagon ride can take place at any time during your visit.

Now for the major disappointment, the mansion. Be prepared for fast talking and be herded through the house. They do tours every 15 minutes with 2 different interpreters in the house. This means a max of 30 minutes in the house before you are pushed out.

We were pleased with the interpreter-led tour of the mansion and we were satisfied doing our own thing walking the grounds and seeing the other buildings on the property. But, man, oh man, was I jealous of the people that were allowed to go out onto the veranda. Had I looked at the differences between packages a little bit more closely ahead of time, I might have been willing to pay the extra to walk out onto a 19th-century plantation veranda! Do be sure to purchase tickets ahead of time online. Delivery times may vary, especially during peak periods. His body lies next to that of his wife in the tomb at the southeast corner of The Hermitage garden.

We did the regular mansion tour, very informative and we got to see everything inside the house. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the house and Andrew Jackson. It was a chilly December day so we didn't tour the grounds but we hope to come back one day and spend more time there. Many shows impose ticket limits to allow as many people as possible to have equal access to seats.
